  • House Staff Assistants (HSAs) organize daily work flow for house officers assigned to the unit, integrating patient assignments, patient needs and individual house officer schedules. HSAs prioritize the many demands made upon the house officer and act as a liaison between the house officer and referring physicians' offices, ancillary personnel and parents. HSAs provide house officers with "protected time" to increase resident education through conferences and meetings, organize all patient discharge planning and facilitate efficient and effective communications with all hospital personnel and patients/families.

  • Free photocopying privileges for residents in the Children’s Hospital Medical Library. Bound and recent journals, monographs and books appropriate to the needs of clinicians are maintained in the Children's Hospital Medical Library, which is open 24 hours.

  • Computer terminals are available in the Children's Hospital Medical Library and on each clinical unit for literature searches and e-mail. User fees are paid by the hospital.

  • The 280,000-volume Washington University Bernard Becker Medical Library is one block away. The library regularly receives more than 2,800 medical journals.

  • Your dues for membership in the American Academy of Pediatrics are provided.

  • The hospital-sponsored Child Development Center is available and located nearby to provide child care for employees of St. Louis Children's Hospital and Washington University School of Medicine. The center is open from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Friday, with extended evening care available until 8 p.m. Programs are available for infants through kindergarten-age children year-round, and camp for school-age children is offered during the summer months.

  • The Scholarly Project Week is provided to all residents. It is a self-directed activity such as focused reading, planning a future research project or continuing an ongoing research project.

  • The option for electives at sites away from St. Louis is available. In recent years, residents have worked abroad on electives in Africa, Antigua, Australia, Great Britain, Honduras, Indonesia, New Zealand and Santa Domingo, and in the United States at Atlanta, Bethesda, Chicago, Denver, Los Angeles, Nashville, New Haven and New York.

  • Breakfast of coffee, juice, bagels, rolls and fruit are provided in the house staff lounge each morning.
