Food

  • Coffee: The medical campus has Kaldi’s Coffee and Starbucks. Most importantly, there is free Keurig coffee in the house staff lounge 24 hours a day.
  • Breakfast: Breakfast is provided in the house staff lounge each morning, consisting of coffee, juice, donuts, bagels, pastries and fruit.
  • Lunch: Lunch is provided at the majority of resident noon conferences.
  • The Farmer’s Market: Fresh, local produce and goods are displayed and sold year-long every Thursday from 10 A.M. to 2 P.M.
  • Dining on and near campus: The medical campus has a Farmstead Cafe and Chick-Fil-A in addition to the hospital cafeteria, open 6am-2am. The Central West End is steps away from the hospital and home to over 30 restaurants.

Residency events

  • Social Events: Monthly happy hours
  • Tickets: St. Louis Cardinal Baseball games, the St. Louis Repertory Theatre, and the world-renowned Saint Louis Symphony are offered to residents throughout the year.
  • Music: Residents can enjoy concerts and musical events presented by Washington University’s Department of Music. The majority are free to attend and held all year long!
  • Intern Retreat: All interns participate in a 2-day retreat free of all clinical responsibilities. The retreat helps enhance skills in team building, communication, stress management, and assessment of personal and professional goals.
  • Senior Retreat: As part of our ongoing commitment to wellness development in our trainees, we host a yearly retreat for senior residents. This retreat focuses on building teamwork and resilience.
  • Book Club: Non-medicine, resident-led book club meeting monthly, virtually or over a happy hour.

Support

  • House Staff Assistants (HSAs) support residents by obtaining outside records, making patient appointments, contributing to discharge planning, and facilitating effective and efficient communication with the multi-disciplinary medical team and patients/families.
  • Taxi service is provided for residents too fatigued to drive home. Security escorts are available after hours to all residents working nights. Free subscription to safety phone application SafeTrek offered to all residents to ensure safe travels at all times.
  • Travel expenses are covered or subsidized for away electives as well as resident attendance at national conferences.
  • Each intern is assigned a faculty mentor at the start of their residency. This is a great resource for career planning and finding research opportunities.

Facilities and resources

  • Resident Lounge: Our House staff Lounge is a recently-renovated, comfortable place for residents to relax between patient care activities. It is outfitted with a Keurig coffee maker, refrigerator, tables, couches, computers, coat racks, and a large TV with DVD player.
  • Free covered parking: Indoor link connecting the parking garage to every building on the medical campus. Shuttle also available.
  • iPhones as pagers: All residents receive an iPhone at the beginning of their intern year. The iPhones allow for secure messaging of Protected Health Information (PHI) while residents are in the hospital or away from campus. The phones also come equipped with every number you may need over your 3 years.
  • The Washington University Bernard Becker Medical Library is a 280-000 volume library and only one block away from SLCH. The library regularly receives more than 2,800 medical journals and e-journals. Residents have electronic access to PubMed, Embase, and eBooks. Residents also have access to free, unlimited mobile access to UpToDate.
  • The Children’s Hospital Medical Library is located next to our resident lounge and is open 24 hours. Recent journals, monographs, and books appropriate to the needs of pediatric clinicians are maintained in the Children’s Hospital Medical Library.
  • Books: Residents receive the Washington Manual of Pediatrics at the beginning of internship. A classic textbook of the resident’s choosing is given at graduation.

Professional societies and certifications

  • American Academy of Pediatrics membership: the program pays resident membership dues, allowing full access to all of the education materials on the AAP website and the PediaLink resident education site including PREP questions to study for the pediatric boards.
  • Certifications: During residency, residents obtain and maintain certification in neonatal resuscitation (NRP), pediatric advanced life support (PALS), and basic life support (BLS).

Other

  • Moonlighting opportunities: There are several moonlighting opportunities for our PL2 and PL3 residents throughout the year. These include covering shifts on the hematology/oncology floor and general medicine floors.
