Morning Report: Interactions and study with chairman, program director and associate program directors, distinguished faculty, chief residents and fellow residents

Work Rounds: Conducted daily after morning report

On Call Schedule:

Night Float: Spend 2-8 weeks on night float during residents second and third years.
Call - Q4:
In first year -- every 4th night in 8-9 of the 13 blocks on the wards, L&D and the NICU
In second year -- Mixture of Q4 and Night Float in 6-7 of the 13 blocks – Q4 call in the special care nursery, NICU, PICU, and the CICU. Night Float on the general pediatric wards.
In third year -- Mixture of Q4 and Night Float in 5-6 of the 13 blocks – Q4 call in the special care nursery, NICU, PICU, and the CICU. Night Float on the general pediatric wards.
Call free blocks: Emergency Unit, COPE weeks, Behavior/Development and Child Advocacy, your Elective, Vacation and Reading Week, plus 1-2 other blocks per year as staffing permits.
Star Call/ Jeopardy Call:This is our coverage system for residents if they become ill or have a family emergency. Each resident is assigned a two-week block of time as the back-up person in these situations. No payback is required as this responsibility is shared equally among residents.

Resident Benefits

Salary: Salary increases yearly; St. Louis has a low cost of living.
  PGY 1 - $44,350
  PGY 2 - $46,352
  PGY 3 - $48,429

Vacation: Three weeks

Holiday break: Five to six days

Scholarly project week: A self-directed activity such as focused reading, planning a future research project or continuing an ongoing research project -- usually combined with one vacation week.

Sick time: 15 days a year (not cumulative)

Maternity and paternity leave: Comprised of vacation and sick time, combined with FMLA. Arranged prior to use.

Family and Medical Leave Act: Leave may be requested for resident’s own health condition, the care of a new child or the health care of a seriously ill family member. This unpaid leave may be granted after one year of employment for a maximum of 12 weeks in a 12-month period per stipulations of FMLA and after use of vacation and sick time.

Non-FMLA: May be granted at the program director’s discretion. Leave of six weeks or less should not delay promotion to the next level of residency, provided all other requirements are met.

Insurance: Medical (GHP POS), dental (Essex); basic life, accidental death/disability, and dependent life insurance — employee/employer contributions

Malpractice: employer pays

Reimbursement Accounts: Employee contribution — permits yearly health care and/or child care expenses to be paid with pre-tax dollars

Retirement: Employee contribution

Child Development Center: The CDC is on campus, providing child care for employees of SLCH and WUSM. Center is open 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday with extended evening care available until 8 p.m. Year-round care for infants through kindergarten-age children and summer camp for school-age children. Has a waiting list.

Resident Perks

Banking: US Bank is on campus. Other banks (Bank of America) are in the Central West End. 24-hour ATMs in the cafeteria. Note: Direct deposit is mandatory for bimonthly salary checks.

Parking: While not across the street, parking is within walking and shuttle distance and free.

Occupational Health Service: Available in the hospital

Complimentary continental breakfast available daily in the house staff lounge

Lunch: Available at all noon resident conferences except on Tuesdays

Evening meal reimbursement: Based on number of call nights. Paid once a year in December.

Yearly schedule: Of 13 four-week blocks

Teaching Rounds: By attendings on each ward

SLCH/WUSM Difference

House Staff Assistants (HSAs): A unique 10-year program originated at SLCH. HSAs are staffed for your assistance on the wards. They organize daily work flow, integrating patient assignments, patient needs and individual house officer schedules. HSAs act as a liaison between you and referring physicians and provide protected time to increase education through conferences and meetings. HSAs organize all patient discharge planning and facilitate efficient and effective communication with all hospital personnel and patients/families.

Private call rooms available

Housestaff Lounge: TV/DVD, three computer stations, comfortable furniture, coffee machine

PDAs: Pilot program under way to provide software for residents to use their PDA for all documentation of duty hours, ACGME procedures log, COPE continuity log, etc.

Faculty Mentors: All interns provided a mentor at orientation. Other faculty available as interests/needs change.

Electives: Sites in St. Louis Children’s Hospital, in St. Louis or surrounding areas as well as international opportunities

International elective: Several established international electives available with travel allowance (Honduras, Malawi, Mexico, Haiti, Antigua, India)

Resident Advocacy Group: Resident-run group with varied interests and accomplishments, e.g., diaper drive, city garden

Duty hours: Enforced as required by ACGME

Certifications: PALS, BLS and NRP, ARCH for transport — we will pay for your initial certification as well as recertification during your residency.

Role of fellows is minimal in daily work on floors.

Libraries: Multiple outstanding libraries are available in the hospital 24 hours a day, seven days a week and at the medical school

Medical search programs: Up To Date, PubMed etc. are available free through Bernard Becker Medical Library

We provide two lab coats with name embroidered your first year and one yearly replacement coat.

Tickets: To St. Louis Repertory Theatre and the world-renowned Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra are offered throughout the year. In addition, the hospital frequently donates Fox Theater or baseball/football tickets to the residents.

Yearly intern retreat with coverage provided by upper-level residents.

Yearly winter holiday party for all residents with coverage by fellows and attendings.

Yearly spring St. Louis Cardinals baseball party for all residents with coverage by fellows and attendings.

Fall/Spring chief resident social events.

Annual SHOW: In December: residents start planning this early.

Beautiful Forest Park right across the street, with tennis courts, an outdoor ice rink, and inline skating, biking and walking paths. The park features the St. Louis Science Center, Saint Louis Art Museum, Missouri History Museum and the Saint Louis Zoo.

Wellness and fitness facilities: BJC WellAware in the Taylor Avenue Building and Irene Walter Johnson Institute of Rehabilitation, both at the Medical Center; Washington University Athletic Complex on the Danforth Campus; YMCA of Greater St. Louis.
