Electives

Electives are part of the curriculum in the second and third years of residency. Many opportunities are available at St. Louis Children’s Hospital, at other U.S. hospitals or through international rotations. International electives provide residents with an understanding of health care issues and health care delivery in developing nations, an awareness of conservation of diagnostic and therapeutic resources, and an opportunity to experience diagnosis and treatment of illnesses they may rarely experience during their training in the United States. Here are two examples of international electives in our program. Stipends for these electives and others are available from the Residency Program.

  • Honduras: Residents spend three weeks at the children’s hospital in Honduras. By special arrangement, the resident may substitute two weeks at a rural clinic for two weeks at the hospital. The fourth week allows time for residents to travel throughout Honduras before returning home.
  • Malawi: Residents care for children in a hospital setting and assist in the nutrition research of Mark Manary, MD, and Project Peanut Butter.
