Primary Care? Academic Medicine? Medical Research? We help each resident identify the right career path. Workshops to prepare for life after residency include guidance on how to prepare curriculum vitae, interview with ease, understand and manage financial issues and negotiate a contract you can live with. Chief Resident: The position of chief resident at St. Louis Children’s Hospital provides a challenging blend of clinical, educational and administrative responsibilities. The year provides an opportunity for refinement of clinical skills, development of leadership skills, participation in residency curriculum planning, and supervision of medical students and junior and senior residents. Mentors and faculty provide guidance. Residents pursue primary care and hospitalist/fellowship training in roughly equal proportions. Fellowship Programs at Washington University- Adolescent Medicine
- Allergy and Pulmonary Medicine
- Cardiology
- Child Neurology (a residency)
- Critical Care Medicine
- Emergency Medicine
- Endocrinology and Diabetes
- Gastroenterology and Nutrition
- Genetics and Genomic Medicine (a residency)

Board Accepted Pathways to Expedite/Enhance Residency or FellowshipSpecial Alternative Pathway The American Board of Pediatrics (ABP) recognizes that occasionally there will be an exceptional candidate who should be given special consideration to begin pediatric subspecialty training after completion of the PL-2 year, reducing the time needed to complete general pediatrics and a subspecialty from six to five years. Candidates for the Special Alternative Pathway (SAP) are reviewed and tested by the ABP before they are accepted into the program. A special test is given to interested residents during the PL-2 year. Integrated Research Pathway The Board of Directors of the ABP has approved a training pathway for individuals who wish to pursue academic careers as pediatric physician-scientists. Application to the Pediatric Research Pathway (PRP) is open to individuals with MD/PhD degrees or those with equivalent evidence of research experience and commitment. The pathway allows trainees to continue their research during general pediatric training. Apply before or early in PL-1 year. Accelerated Research Pathway The Accelerated Research Pathway (ARP) is designed to accommodate and encourage candidates who are committed to an academic career as physician-scientists with a strong research emphasis in a pediatric subspecialty. Candidates entering the ARP may begin subspecialty training after completion of two years of general comprehensive pediatric training. The availability of this pathway is at the discretion of the general pediatrics program director/subspecialty fellowship program director. Candidates should be identified early in the PL-1 year. Resident ResearchPediatric residents are welcome to participate in research, although it is not a requirement. We can provide interested individuals with information on research opportunities. We encourage and support residents who submit abstracts resulting from work conducted during residency and who travel to present if an abstract is accepted. We support resident representation at American Academy of Pediatrics conferences and other professional organizations such as Pediatric Academic Societies and Student National Medical Association. Clinical Sciences Training and Research (C-STAR) A new research opportunity has been developed for pediatric residents interested in primary-care medicine. The goal is to prepare the resident to practice evidence-based medicine in the community setting. This opportunity is open to two residents each year who have chosen to practice general pediatrics within the community. The time frame will be September through November with limited call.
