Come be a part of the WUSM/SLCH Tradition
- Great faculty and residents
- Cutting edge research
- 14,000 hospital discharges
- Nearly 4,000 births
- 185,000 pediatric and subspecialty clinic visits per year
- Mix of primary and tertiary cases
Our program participates in the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). All applicants must apply through ERAS. We sponsor J-1 visas only.
A complete application consists of the following:
- Dean’s letter
- Transcript of grades
- USMLE Step 1 scores
- Personal statement
- Three letters of recommendation written by physicians with whom you have worked during medical training. Preferably, one letter will be written by the chairman of the department of pediatrics at your medical school or the pediatric residency program director.
- Foreign medical graduates will need a valid ECFMG certificate by the time of the interview.
The Interview
Applicants will be invited to dinners at a resident’s home or a social gathering at a favorite restaurant, each held once a week.
During your interview you will tour St. Louis Children’s Hospital and meet with several of the faculty and residents. We begin interviews in October; we do not interview during December holiday break, and we complete our interviewing season early in January. Most interviews are concentrated in the three months following the mailing of medical school deans’ letters — November, December and January. If a student requests an earlier interview, we can accommodate him or her in October. We strive to conduct interviews in small groups so that we may provide you with personal attention during your visit.
The interview day begins at 7:25 a.m. Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays/8 a.m. Fridays, with morning report and a group meeting with our program director. Applicants can expect to meet individually with two or three faculty members and to share a conference/lunch with pediatric residents. Lunch is followed by a tour of the hospital conducted by three or four residents and finally coffee, dessert and a relaxing and informative conversation with your tour guides. The interview day will be completed by 3:30 p.m., although the program encourages you to browse the units, the emergency room, or library, or to attend rounds, as schedules permit.
The residency program will pay for and arrange accommodations for one night at the Parkway Hotel when reservations are made through the house staff office. The hotel is on campus at the Washington University Medical Center near an historic neighborhood, featuring great architecture, award-winning cafes, shops and fine art galleries. This neighborhood is home to many residents, medical students and others affiliated with the Medical Center. The hotel has an indoor connection to the hospital.
The Department of Pediatrics has a policy of not pursuing additional recruiting activities after candidates’ visits. Please do not interpret this as a lack of interest. Washington University is eager to fill its ranks with enthusiastic, compassionate and able physicians.
