World Experience in Lung Transplantation

The first successful heart-lung transplantation was performed in 1981. Concurrent clinical research led to the development of single and double lung transplantation in 1983 through 1985. The Registry of the International Society of Heart and Lung Transplantation maintains world wide statistics for heart, heart-lung, and lung transplantation.

Over 4,000 lung transplant procedures had been reported to the Registry. This includes over 3, 000 patients in the U.S.

Living Donor Lung Transplantation at St. Louis Children's Hospital

In 1992, the first lung transplant utilizing a lobe from an adult donor in a pediatric recipient was performed. Since that time, over 50 living donor lung transplants have been performed worldwide in adult and pediatric recipients, including 8 at SLCH. We reserve LDLT for patients who have been previously evaluated and listed for cadaveric lung transplant in whom deterioration makes death imminent with a low prospect of obtaining cadaver donor organs. In our program, the indication for LDLT requires the potential recipient to be at imminent risk of dying (within 1 month) but nonetheless clinically stable.
