iPass Account Information

iPass accounts should be requested through MCSN's registration page.

What is an iPass account?

iPass accounts provide users with the ability to dial in to a large number of local internet service providers all over the world. Without an iPass account, if you travel out of state (or out of country) with your laptop, and wish to dial in to the internet, you will need to make a long distance call to our dial-up lines in Saint Louis. You will be charged long distance rates for the entire time that you're connected.

With an iPass account, you would instead open the iPass application. It would direct you to select your current geographic location, and then it would connect you to a much closer internet service provider so that you won't incur the same phone charges you would when connecting to St. Louis.

For additional information regarding iPass's functioning, please see MSCNS's site.

How much does iPass cost?

iPass bills MSCNS for all accounts, and MSCNS passes those charges on to your department. When you request a new account, you will be charged a fee of $25.00 to create the account. This charge will show up as an IDO in FIS. You will be charged $25.00 per each account every July 1st. To save $25.00, you may want to hold off until after July 1st if you are considering adding a new account near the end of the fiscal year.

In addition to these charges, users should expect to be billed for any phone call charges. iPass has very extensive coverage, but some areas may require a toll phone call to connect. If you are concerned about long distance charges, you can review iPass' global coverage at their web site. Look for the 'points of presence' link. Also, some hotels may place additional charges on phone use.

How do I set up iPass on my computer?

You can find software installers, installation instructions, and user guide documents on MSCNS's site. If you would rather, you may contact the helpdesk (helpdesk@kids.wustl.edu, (314) 362-9500) to request that PCF handle the install for you.

Will Clinical Desktop and ESA work with iPass?

Yes. You can simply run Citrix over your iPass connection to have a secure tunnel in your Citrix profile.
