Q.
How do I check the status of a PC/printer order?
Q.
What exactly is "spyware" and how does it install on my PC?
|
Spyware is software that installs, often times without
your knowledge, on your pc as you download "freeware"
applications. Spyware gathers personal information
(e.g. passwords, email addresses, web browsing history,
online buying habits, the hardware/software configuration
of your PC. . .) for advertisers and marketing firms as
you browse the Internet.
Some web pages, or pop-up ads, may fool you into clicking
a "Yes" button by stating that the download is necessary
to view the full contents of the site. Examples of some
spyware include: WebShots, Gator, Spinner, FlashTrack,
HotBar, Klez, BonziBuddy, Comet Cursor. These applications
run continuously in the background on your PC—fighting for
valuable system resources which make it hard for you to
run your normal applications.
This type of unsolicited software can:
- Leave security holes that allow others to
download and run software on your machine without
your knowledge,
- Alter important system files,
- Provide no uninstall feature,
- Send your personal data to a third party,
- Degrade system performance and cause errors,
- Hijack your browser start page,
- Track your Internet surfing habits.
If you feel you may have spyware, please contact the PCF Helpdesk @ (314) 362-9500
