Newborn Medicine | Clinical Activities
The Division of Newborn Medicine faculty
provides clinical coverage for the 52 bed neonatal intensive care unit
at St. Louis Children's Hospital. This unit provides all neonatal
services, including evaluation for solid organ transplantation,
extracorporeal membrane oxygenation, and a full spectrum of surgical and
medical subspecialty consultants.
In FY00, there were 724 admissions to the NICU.
The
Division faculty provides clinical coverage for the Special Care
Nursery, normal nursery, and delivery services at Barnes-Jewish
Hospital. The obstetrical service delivered 3919 women in FY00,
and physicians from newborn medicine attended approximately 40%
of the deliveries. The Special Care Nursery had 728 admissions.
The Division
faculty provides antenatal consultation services in collaboration with
the Division of Maternal Fetal Medicine, Genetics, and Ultrasound of the
Department of Obstetrics. Patients with high risk pregnancies are
referred by obstetricians for multidisciplinary consultations with
Newborn Faculty members as well as faculty from other relevant divisions
(e.g., Pediatric Cardiology, Pediatric General Surgery, Pediatric
Urology, etc.). In addition, families may have the opportunity to tour
the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, arrange lodging, and discuss directed
donor blood transfusions. During 1999-2000, the Division saw 390
patients for antenatal consultation.
The
Division faculty provides followup services for infants discharged from
one of these units as well as for infants referred for consultation by
pediatricians, family practitioners, or nurse practitioners. A full
range of followup services is available, including developmental
testing, ophthalmologic and audiology testing, and pediatric 1029
consultant services. During FY00, the Followup Clinic saw 982
patients. The clinic meets on Wednesday mornings, but faculty are
available any day to see urgent consultations.
The Division faculty provides clinical coverage for the Special
Care Nursery, normal nursery, and delivery services at Missouri Baptist
Medical Center. In addition, the Division collaborates closely with
Obstetrics faculty members to provide antenatal consultation at this
site. During FY00, there were 3065 deliveries at Missouri Baptist
Medical Center and 399 admissions to the Special Care Nursery for 3,237
patients days.
The Division faculty
provides clinical coverage for the Special Care Nursery, normal nursery,
and delivery services at Christian Northwest Hospital. During
FY00, there were 1460 deliveries at Christian Northwest Hospital
and 149 admissions to the Special Care Nursery for 1,118 patient days.
The Division currently has the largest experience in the world with
infants with inherited causes of respiratory failure, including most
notably surfactant protein B deficiency. The neonatal intensive care
unit at St. Louis Children's Hospital is also experienced in evaluation
of infants for solid organ transplantation, including heart, lung, and
liver transplantation. Faculty members (Bradley Thach, M.D.) have
extensive experience in understanding methods for reducing frequency of
sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). Finally, the Division has interest
and experience in developing international relationships with nurseries
and currently has affiliations with the Riga Children's Hospital, in
Riga, Latvia, and the Samsung Cheil Women's and Infants' Center in
Seoul, South Korea.
