Newborn Medicine | Clinical Activities


St. Louis Children's Hospital

The Division of Newborn Medicine faculty provides clinical coverage for the 52 bed neonatal intensive care unit at St. Louis Children's Hospital. This unit provides all neonatal services, including evaluation for solid organ transplantation, extracorporeal membrane oxygenation, and a full spectrum of surgical and medical subspecialty consultants. In FY00, there were 724 admissions to the NICU.

Barnes-Jewish Hospital

The Division faculty provides clinical coverage for the Special Care Nursery, normal nursery, and delivery services at Barnes-Jewish Hospital. The obstetrical service delivered 3919 women in FY00, and physicians from newborn medicine attended approximately 40% of the deliveries. The Special Care Nursery had 728 admissions.

Antenatal Consultation Service

The Division faculty provides antenatal consultation services in collaboration with the Division of Maternal Fetal Medicine, Genetics, and Ultrasound of the Department of Obstetrics. Patients with high risk pregnancies are referred by obstetricians for multidisciplinary consultations with Newborn Faculty members as well as faculty from other relevant divisions (e.g., Pediatric Cardiology, Pediatric General Surgery, Pediatric Urology, etc.). In addition, families may have the opportunity to tour the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, arrange lodging, and discuss directed donor blood transfusions. During 1999-2000, the Division saw 390 patients for antenatal consultation.

Newborn Followup

The Division faculty provides followup services for infants discharged from one of these units as well as for infants referred for consultation by pediatricians, family practitioners, or nurse practitioners. A full range of followup services is available, including developmental testing, ophthalmologic and audiology testing, and pediatric 1029 consultant services. During FY00, the Followup Clinic saw 982 patients. The clinic meets on Wednesday mornings, but faculty are available any day to see urgent consultations.

Missouri Baptist Medical Center

The Division faculty provides clinical coverage for the Special Care Nursery, normal nursery, and delivery services at Missouri Baptist Medical Center. In addition, the Division collaborates closely with Obstetrics faculty members to provide antenatal consultation at this site. During FY00, there were 3065 deliveries at Missouri Baptist Medical Center and 399 admissions to the Special Care Nursery for 3,237 patients days.

Christian Northwest Hospital

The Division faculty provides clinical coverage for the Special Care Nursery, normal nursery, and delivery services at Christian Northwest Hospital. During FY00, there were 1460 deliveries at Christian Northwest Hospital and 149 admissions to the Special Care Nursery for 1,118 patient days.

Specialized Clinical Services

The Division currently has the largest experience in the world with infants with inherited causes of respiratory failure, including most notably surfactant protein B deficiency. The neonatal intensive care unit at St. Louis Children's Hospital is also experienced in evaluation of infants for solid organ transplantation, including heart, lung, and liver transplantation. Faculty members (Bradley Thach, M.D.) have extensive experience in understanding methods for reducing frequency of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). Finally, the Division has interest and experience in developing international relationships with nurseries and currently has affiliations with the Riga Children's Hospital, in Riga, Latvia, and the Samsung Cheil Women's and Infants' Center in Seoul, South Korea.
