Fellowship Training in Pediatric Diabetes
Contact: Neil H. White, M.D., C.D.E.
The Division of Endocrinology and Diabetes has an NIDDK/JDRF/ADA-funded
Fellowship Training Program in Pediatric Diabetes, supported by a T32 grant
and associated with an institutional career development program (K12). The
long-term objective of the training program is to take advantage of the
considerable resources and strengths of Washington University School of
Medicine to facilitate training and career development in biomedical
research and education related to childhood diabetes. There are 29
potential faculty mentors with diabetes-related research interests divided
into four general themes: Immumobiology of Type 1 Diabetes; Insulin
Secretion and Action; Biology of Diabetes Complications; and Prevention and
Control of Diabetes and Its Complications. The overall specific aims of
this fellowship training program are: 1) to identify potential trainees
during their pediatric residency; and 2) to provide trainees with research
training in pediatric diabetes in the laboratory of an established
investigator. The program provides support for two years of research
training in pediatric diabetes in the course of a 3-year, ACGME-accredited
fellowship experience in pediatric endocrinology and metabolism. The
training includes direct research experience under the guidance of a
well-established mentor and didactic training in pediatric diabetes and
clinical research.
