Training of Pediatric Physician Scientists

Contact: Jonathan D. Gitlin, M.D.

This is an NICHD Institutional Research Training Grant within the Department of Pediatrics at Washington University School of Medicine. The intent is to promote the career development of young pediatric physician-scientists who will become the future leaders in the biomedical research efforts dedicated to child health. Potential trainees are identified at completion of their residency training and provided with a three year research experience in the laboratory of a highly qualified research mentor while protected from clinical and teaching responsibilities. The program focuses on utilizing the recent advances in cell, molecular and developmental biology to develop pediatric physician-scientists with new insights into the pathogenesis and treatment of pediatric diseases. The long-range goal is to close the gap between basic biologists and pediatric clinicians.
