Emergency Medicine
Patient Oriented Research

Pediatric Emergency Medicine (PEM) is still a relatively new pediatric subspecialty, and I have been privileged to have been a part of its growth and development from the early days. For example, I was the first PEM fellow in the United States, participated in writing the first textbook and published an article in the first volume of Pediatric Emergency Care, the first PEM journal. I was a founding member of both multi-institutional research networks in PEM, the Pediatric Emergency Medicine Collaborative Research Consortium (PEMCRC), supported by the American Academy of Pediatrics and the federally funded Pediatric Emergency Care Applied Research Network (PECARN).   I have taken leadership roles in a number of relevant professional societies, most notably the American Academy of Pediatrics, the Academic Pediatric Association and the American Board of Pediatrics.   I also helped to establish and continue to direct the annual Pediatric Emergency Fellows’ Conference.   Through all of these activities, it is my goal to advance the scholarship within the field of PEM, and ultimately to improve the health outcomes of children and their families in need of emergency care.
