Specialties | DIVISION OF CRITICAL CARE MEDICINE
Introduction
The Division of Pediatric Critical Care Medicine provides an academic structure
for the activities involved in the care of critically ill children in the
Washington University School of Medicine Department of Pediatrics and the St.
Louis Children's Hospital Pediatric Intensive Care Unit. The primary goal of
the division is excellence in the care of critically ill children through a
scientific approach to clinical practice, attention to education, and basic and
clinical research.
The Pediatric Intensive Care Unit at St. Louis Children's Hospital is equipped to provide the highest level of care to critically ill children. The unit has capacity for up to 30 patients, all accommodated in individual rooms. It averages approximately 1,300 admissions per year and is staffed by two medical teams, both operating under the auspices of the Division of Critical Care Medicine. One team is multidisciplinary and dedicated to the care of infants and children with respiratory failure, central nervous system dysfunction, trauma and other miscellaneous medical and surgical diseases. The other team cares specifically for children with cardiovascular dysfunction or who have undergone corrective surgery for congenital heart disease, heart or lung transplantation, or extracorporeal membrane oxygenation. Each team incorporates a wide array of health professionals, including pharmacists, respiratory and physical therapists, dieticians and social workers.
A total of four pediatric and emergency medicine residents are assigned to the unit at all times. Residents round with both teams to assure that they receive a wide exposure to children with critical illnesses. Critical care medicine and other subspecialty fellows are assigned specifically to each team to provide them with a more focused experience and to increase opportunities to lead others in the management of complex life-threatening disease. The division holds one weekly clinical conference on Mondays at noon. Additional learning opportunities are available for fellows and residents, including a weekly fellows research conference (Tuesdays at 4 p.m.), a weekly fellows curricular conference (Wednesdays at 5 p.m.), a monthly morbidity and mortality conference (second Thursday of the month at 5 p.m.), and a monthly cardiac intensive care conference with the members of the cardiology and cardiothoracic surgery divisions (third Friday of the month at 7:30 a.m.).
The Pediatric Intensive Care Unit has an open design, which permits patient's families to visit at all hours. Formal rounds are conducted twice a day, with both teams rounding consecutively between 7:30 and 9:30 a.m. and 5 and 6 p.m.
