Pediatric Clerkship

Instructors

  • Douglas W. Carlson, M.D.  h | c
  • Angela Sharkey, M.D.  h | c

This six week curriculum is divided into three smaller 2-week clerkships, emphasizing pediatric pathophysiology and normal growth and development from birth through adolescence. You will be spend time assessing newborns in the Regular or Special Care nurseries at Barnes-Jewish or Missouri Baptist Medical Center or spend time seeing patients in the Pediatric Emergency Department at St. Louis Children’s Hospital or Missouri Baptist Medical Center Acute Care. You will also spend time at St. Louis Children's Hospital on an inpatient service (12West, 9West, 8West, 8East and outpatient Hematology Oncology on 9South). Emphasis is on performing a pediatric history and physical examination and developing an appropriate differential diagnosis regardless of the patient’s age. Daily rounds with house staff and attending physicians, as well as weekly case management conferences and grand rounds, further this emphasis. A weekly core lecture series also is offered during this 6-week clerkship.
