We have one of the most active pediatric heart failure and cardiac transplantation programs in the United States and are a regional referral center for infants, children, and adolescents with heart failure secondary to congenital heart disease or cardiomyopathy. Approximately 20-25 heart transplantations are performed each year at St. Louis Children’s Hospital. A number of pediatric patients have been bridged to transplant with the Berlin Heart, the only ventricular assist device available for children under 2 years of age. Fellows rotate on this service for one month during their first year, including in the outpatient specialty clinic for pediatric heart failure/cardiac transplantation. Fellows gain further experience managing the acute care of this complex population of patients during their inpatient service and CICU months.
