Assistant Professor of Pediatrics
Patient Oriented Research
Infectious Diseases
Dr. Elward received her bachelor's degree at Loyola College in Baltimore and her medical degree at the University of Maryland School of Medicine. She completed a pediatric residency and chief residency and then a fellowship in pediatric infectious diseases at St. Louis Children's Hospital, Washington University School of Medicine. She joined the Department of Pediatrics as an Instructor in 2001.
Dr. Elward's research interests center around the epidemiology and outcomes of nosocomial infections in children. She is currently investigating risk factors for nosocomial blood stream infections and ventilator-associated pneumonia among patients in the pediatric intensive care unit (PICU). In addition, she is studying the attributable morbidity and mortality related to nosocomial infections acquired in the PICU. A third focus is the relationship between duration and type of prior antibiotic use and the development of nosocomial infections.
