Dr. Jaffe is currently the Dana Brown/St. Louis Children's Hospital Professor of Pediatrics and Director of the Division of Emergency Medicine at Washington University School of Medicine. In addition, he is Medical Director of Emergency Services at St. Louis Children's Hospital. He received his medical degree from the University of Chicago. At the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, he completed his pediatric residency and then simultaneously became a Robert Wood Johnson Fellow in General Academic Pediatrics and one of the first American Fellows in Pediatric Emergency Medicine. His first academic position was at Northwestern University in Chicago, after which he spent three years as the Director of Pediatric Emergency Medicine at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. He has been at Washington University since 1991. Dr. Jaffe received permanent board certification in Pediatrics in 1982. He is also board certified in Emergency Medicine and subspecialty board certified in Pediatric Emergency Medicine.
Dr. Jaffe's research interests are in medical decision making, with a focus on the febrile child and occult bacteremia, but also with a secondary focus on children with head and neck injuries. He is also interested in research on the management of pain and anxiety in children with emergencies. Dr. Jaffe has been on the editorial board of Pediatric Emergency Care since 1984, Pediatric Emergency & Critical Care since 1992, and Decision Editor for Annals of Emergency Medicine since 1997. He is past chair of the Section on Emergency Medicine of the American Academy of Pediatrics, a Member of the American Board of Pediatrics, and chair-elect of the Subboard of Pediatric Emergency Medicine.
