Faro, Albert, M.D.

Associate Professor of Pediatrics

Allergy, Immunology and Pulmonary Medicine
Patient Oriented Research
Lung Transplantation

Dr. Faro is the physician co-leader of the 7 East Unit Based Joint Practice Team at St. Louis Children's Hospital.. He along with his co-leader and the staff of 7 East continue to work towards making 7 East a model in-patient unit for children with any pulmonary or allergy disorder. Dr. Faro’s research interests focus on improving our understanding of the mechanisms that lead to post-transplant bronchiolitis obliterans. He is one of several investigators involved in a multicenter study to determine if respiratory viruses do lead to the development of BO and by what immunologic mechanism does BO occur. Through the International Pediatric Lung Transplant Collaborative (IPLTC), which he co-founded, he has been involved in multiple projects including: the effects of prophylaxis against Cytomegalovirus post-transplant; the impact of fungal infections after lung transplant; the impact of lung transplant on the quality of life after lung transplantation in children with cystic fibrosis; and the establishment of an international pediatric lung transplant database. Dr. Faro is also passionate about finding new therapies that will improve the lives of children with cystic fibrosis. He is the co-director of the Cystic Fibrosis Therapeutics Development Network at Washington University and is involved in multicenter studies that will hopefully one day lead to therapies that will control, if not cure, this disease.
Dr. Faro is a former President of the IPLTC. He presently serves on the Executive Committee of the Pediatric Community of Practice of the American Society of Transplantation. He also serves on the American Academy of PediatricsSection on Pediatric Pulmonology Executive Committee; Section Nominations Committee. He has formerly served on the Education Committee of the American Society of Transplantation and the Executive Committee of the Pulmonary Section of the American Academy of Pediatrics.
